About Us
Peoples Bank’s service to this community began back in 1908, when two men of vision, Colonel Sidney McLaurin and Dewitt Enochs, decided to charter a new bank in Mendenhall and called A. S. Davis to be its first cashier. Mr. Davis was the managing officer of the bank, as the two founders, Colonel McLaurin and Mr. Enochs, held the titles of President and Vice-President of the bank but never actually worked there. R. E. Gulledge succeeded Colonel McLaurin as President, and was succeeded by A. S. Davis, who held the position until his death in 1928.
Following A. S. Davis as President was Brent Durr, who served until his death in 1953, and was succeeded by Sidney D. Davis, Sr., who had joined the bank’s staff in 1932.
Mr. Davis served Peoples Bank for 65 years, rising from a simple clerk to Chairman of the Board. His retirement in December of 1997 marked the passing of an era. Sidney was probably the last active banker in America who played any significant role in a bank surviving the depression and the mandated “bank holiday” on June 5, 1933. More banks closed in America that day then any day before or since. The largest banks in Mississippi closed that day. Peoples Bank did not.
Still headquartered in Mendenhall, just across Main Street from our original location, Peoples Bank is firmly planted in the lives of our community. We have been a common thread in generations of growth and prosperity. We feel blessed to have been around 100 years and look forward to continuing our strong tradition of serving our community for many more years.
